PDF compression shrinks a file's size so it's easier to email, upload to a website, or submit to a document system with attachment size limits. Heavy PDFs are usually bloated by high-resolution images and scans — and that's exactly what compression optimizes, without splitting the document into parts.

To compress a PDF, upload your file above, pick a compression level, and download the smaller version. Processing runs on our server through Ghostscript — an industry-standard PDF tool — so the document's structure, text, and page order stay intact.

Three levels are available. "Strong" (72 dpi) gives the smallest file size and suits on-screen viewing and quick sharing. "Medium" (150 dpi) balances size and quality, and works well for most everyday needs. "Light" (300 dpi) preserves image quality as much as possible and is best for print. The higher the compression, the more visible the loss of sharpness in embedded images, while text stays crisp at every level. If a document has few or no images, the size reduction will be modest — there's simply not much to compress. The source file is removed from our server right after processing. Maximum file size is 25 MB. Need to edit the content instead? Try PDF to Word.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the content: PDFs full of photos and scans compress the most (often 2–5x), while text-heavy files shrink less. The stronger the compression, the smaller the result and the lower the image resolution.
"Strong" (72 dpi) for emailing and on-screen viewing. "Medium" (150 dpi) is a solid all-around balance. "Light" (300 dpi) when the document is headed for print and quality matters.
Text stays vector-based and sharp. What shrinks is the resolution of raster images inside the PDF — so strong compression makes photos noticeably less detailed.
