How to Write an Amount in Words for a Contract or Invoice

23/06/2026

In contracts, invoices, receipts, and payment orders, it's standard practice to spell out the amount in words alongside the digits. This guards against forgery and typos: a digit is easy to alter, a word is not. Let's look at how to write an amount correctly.

Why spell out the amount in words

If a contract says "$10,000," a zero can easily be added or erased. That's why the amount is also spelled out in words nearby — if the digits and the words disagree, the written-out words usually take legal priority. This is a standard practice in business documents.

The main rules

  • Capitalize the first word, keep the rest lowercase: "Ten thousand dollars and 00 cents."
  • Cents are written in digits, not words: "...dollars and 50 cents," not "and fifty cents." This is standard accounting practice and easier to read at a glance.
  • The whole amount in words, the cents in digits. The classic format: Amount in words, capitalized, dollars and NN cents.
  • Subject-verb and number agreement matters in the underlying language of the document — for example "one thousand," "two dollars," "twenty-one cents." This is where mistakes happen most often.

Examples

In digits In words
$1,250.00 One thousand two hundred fifty dollars and 00 cents
$10,000.50 Ten thousand dollars and 50 cents
$21,341.05 Twenty-one thousand three hundred forty-one dollars and 05 cents

Pay close attention to correct number agreement in large sums — that's exactly where errors tend to creep in.

How to avoid mistakes

Getting the wording of numbers right is a common source of typos, especially in large amounts. Rather than doing it by hand, use the number-to-words tool: enter the amount in digits, choose the currency mode, and get a ready-made string with correct wording and cents. Then just copy it into your document.

This is handy for invoices, contracts, acts, receipts, and any payment documents. And if a contract involves a foreign currency, the currency converter can help you convert it at the current exchange rate.
