You downloaded a book in EPUB, sent it to your Kindle — and the device simply doesn't see the file, or refuses to open it. This isn't a bug: Kindle has historically not supported EPUB directly, it needs MOBI or AZW3.
Why Kindle doesn't read EPUB
From the start, Amazon used its own proprietary formats for Kindle — first MOBI, then AZW3 and KFX. EPUB is an open standard developed separately, and Kindle doesn't support it without conversion. This applies to both older and many newer models, unless the book arrived through the Amazon store itself.
How to convert EPUB to MOBI for Kindle
Upload the file to the EPUB to MOBI converter and download the resulting MOBI file — Calibre on the server preserves the table of contents, chapters, and images. From there, you need to get the book onto the device one of two ways:
- Send-to-Kindle — email the file to your personal Kindle address (something like yourname@kindle.com); Amazon syncs it to the device automatically.
- Via USB cable — connect the Kindle to your computer as a drive and copy the file into the documents folder.
What if MOBI doesn't open on a newer Kindle
For 2022-and-newer models, Amazon recommends AZW3 or KFX, but MOBI usually still opens — it's a stable format kept around for backward compatibility. If a file won't open on your specific model, try sending it via send-to-kindle instead: Amazon sometimes converts the file automatically during delivery.
The reverse case: reading a Kindle MOBI file in another app
Sometimes it's the other way around: a book was bought or downloaded in MOBI, but you need to read it in an app that only understands EPUB — PocketBook, Apple Books, Google Play Books. One important caveat: the converter does not remove DRM protection from books purchased on Amazon. It only works with unprotected files — for example, your own books or ones legally downloaded without DRM.
