How to Crop a Photo into a Square for Instagram

When you upload a photo to Instagram, it often gets cropped in a way you didn't intend, or loses quality in the process. To stay in control of the result, it's easier to prepare the image ahead of time — cropping it to the right proportions yourself.

What sizes you need

Instagram uses a few different formats:

• Square 1:1 — the classic feed format, 1080×1080 pixels.
• Vertical 4:5 — takes up more space in the feed, 1080×1350.
• Stories and Reels 9:16 — full-screen vertical, 1080×1920.

If you fit your photo to these dimensions beforehand, the platform won't crop it however it sees fit.

How to crop a photo into a square online

Open the image crop tool, upload your photo, set the width and height (for example, 1080 and 1080 for a square), and choose the crop position. The tool scales the image so it fully fills the target area and trims the excess — no white bars, no distortion. The resulting file downloads in the same format.

The crop position ("center," "top," and so on) determines which part of the photo survives if the source proportions differ from the target ones. For portraits, "top" is often the better choice so you don't cut off the face.

Cropping or resizing?

These are two different tasks:

• Cropping changes the proportions by cutting away part of the image — this is what you need to get a clean square or vertical shape.
• Resizing scales the whole picture up or down while keeping its proportions. If your photo already has the right shape but is simply too large, use resize image instead.

Tips

• Prepare photos at a resolution of at least 1080 pixels on the short side, so the result stays sharp.
• Don't upscale small images to larger sizes — that won't add quality that isn't there.
• Keep the original around in case you need a different format later.
